CUT History

Short history of church universal and triumphant

The Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) is a New Age religious movement founded in the 20th century, known for its blending of Christian, Theosophical, and esoteric teachings, including beliefs in ascended masters and spiritual energy work.

Here’s a short history:

Origins and Early Development (1930s–1975)

  • The roots of the Church Universal and Triumphant trace back to the I AM Activity, founded in the 1930s by Guy and Edna Ballard. This was one of the first major Ascended Master Teachings movements in the U.S.
  • In 1958Mark L. Prophet founded The Summit Lighthouse, which taught similar ascended master doctrines.
  • After his death in 1973, his wife Elizabeth Clare Prophet took leadership and became the church’s most well-known figure.

Founding of CUT (1975)

  • In 1975, Elizabeth Clare Prophet reorganized the Summit Lighthouse into the Church Universal and Triumphant.
  • The church expanded rapidly in the late 1970s and 1980s, with headquarters established in Montana, at the Royal Teton Ranch, near Yellowstone National Park.

Apocalyptic Focus and Decline (1980s–1990s)

  • During the Cold War, Elizabeth Clare Prophet predicted a potential nuclear war, prompting members to build extensive fallout shelters in the late 1980s.
  • These doomsday preparations peaked in 1990, when followers conducted drills and stocked supplies. The predicted war never occurred, leading to disillusionment and a decline in membership.
  • Elizabeth Clare Prophet was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and gradually withdrew from leadership.

Later Years and Legacy (2000s–Present)

  • Elizabeth Clare Prophet died in 2009.
  • Since then, CUT has continued on a much smaller scale. It retains a loyal core membership and still promotes teachings of the Ascended Masters and spiritual practices.

Beliefs Summary:

  • Ascended Masters: Enlightened beings (including Jesus, Buddha, Saint Germain) who guide humanity.
  • Decrees and mantras: Spoken prayers for protection and spiritual advancement.
  • Karma and reincarnation: Key components of spiritual evolution.
  • Spiritual hierarchy and divine missions.
